
Growing frustration in China as two of its largest cities tighten curbs over unrelenting COVID-19 outbreaks. On May 9, Shanghai saw a rebound in symptomatic infections, with over 300 recorded. Hundreds of sub-districts now face harsher restrictions, as authorities implement what they call “static management”. Under this new measure, a standstill order is implemented even for areas that have achieved China’s so-called “societal zero-COVID” goal. Meanwhile, downtown Beijing is also at a standstill, with all public transport services halted in the capital’s most populous Chaoyang district.
